-- Last Week, we learned that Sony has scrapped "Spider-Man 4." We now know that Tobey Maguire, Sam Raimi and that entire crew is totally out, but now we have new information. EW is reporting that Sony was already aiming to reboot the series in 2012, with or without Raimi's film. Reason: if they stop making Spider-Man movies, the rights go back to Disney/Marvel. James Vanderbilt has already written a script for the reboot, so with Raimi out, they just move that script up in the timetable. Very interesting.

-- A couple of casting stories today. First, Peter Sarsgaard is in talks to play Dr. Hector Hammond, the bad-guy in the upcoming "Green Lantern" for Warner Bros. Ryan Reynolds is cast to play Hal Jordan, with Blake Lively playing his love interest. The film will start lensing in March.

-- Finally, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris have picked their next project. The "Little Miss Sunshine" directors are going to be making "Will," a quirky comedy written by Demetri Martin about a world in which people's lives are scripted by angles and the problem when an angel quits. Attached to star are Zach Galifianakis and Paul Rudd. Here's hoping that Zach is playing the angel, although no word on who is playing who.

-- From Studio Briefing...Some of the country's biggest media conglomerates and film producers -- and one Indian player -- are looking to buy MGM, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Tuesday), citing people familiar with the matter. In advance of Friday's deadline for bidding, offers have been submitted by Time Warner Inc.; Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.; News Corp, Summit Entertainment; Liberty Media Corp.; CBS Corp.; At&T Inc. and Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd., the Journal said, adding that additional bids are expected from former News Corp President Peter Chernin and former Yahoo Chairman/CEO Terry Semel. Each of the bids is in the $2-billion range, according to the newspaper, far below the studio's $3.7 billion debt load.
